Hanse Haus clients report on their own homes

Having their own house is a dream for our clients, even if it isn’t the biggest.

More than 30,000 clients have put their trust in us to quickly and easily see their dream house become a reality.

We have put together a small selection of building projects for you to look at, and we invite you to see what you think of our services for yourself.

A UNIQUE, ENERGY-SAVING PASSIVE HOUSE

Homeowners Marc Muller and Iris von der Heyden demolished their former home in Luxembourg to make way for an extremely energy-saving passive house from Hanse Haus.

The reasons for deciding on the passive house standard were clear to the couple: “Firstly, because we realise it is essential to conserve resources for the sake of future generations, and secondly because you never know what demands will be placed on a house if energy prices soar even higher. We also considered energy-optimised construction to boost the value of our property.”
As they are both busy professionals, the large range of services offered by Hanse Haus from a single source was an essential criterion when choosing their building partner. “We felt that we were in excellent hands and received expert support from all those involved at every stage of the planning and building.” Their trust in Hanse Haus was so great that the homeowners even went on holiday during the building period. And they weren't disappointed: “When we returned home and saw the site, there stood a professionally constructed house. An unforgettable experience.”

CREATIVE SOLUTIONS FOR CREATIVE MINDS

People involved in design and the finer things in life naturally have their own individual take on aesthetics and style. Little wonder that when this homeowner, a fabric designer and author, decided to build her own home, she also wanted to implement her own distinctive ideas. The Hanse Haus expertise in implementing individual home concepts gave the homeowners the opportunity to put their ideas for their ideal home into practice without compromise.
Taking a bright, beautiful hillside location the couple, together with Hanse Haus, planned a modern flat-roofed building which offered not only living space but also studio space in which the designer could work. Large, south-facing glazed panels let natural light into the rooms, generating a pleasant atmosphere in which to live and work. The spacious balconies and galleries give the homeowners spectacular, inspiring views over the town, ideal for whiling away evenings in cosy surroundings as they recharge.

A CERTIFIED PASSIVE HOUSE IN THE UK

After our clients, the Stent family, had submitted their first proposals for an energy overhaul of their old home in the UK they soon realised that an energy-efficient new build would make far more financial sense.
A further advantage was that the new house could be individually adapted to suit their wishes. “The fact that with Hanse Haus we could build our house exactly as we had imagined it, together with the high quality standards of the German manufacturer, made a lasting impression on us,” said homeowner Richard Stent. “The passive house standard was the icing on the cake for us.” The Stents’ home was officially certified as a passive house by the Passivhaus Institut Darmstadt.

MAKING THE MOST OF A DIFFICULT BUILDING PLOT

Homeowners in South Tyrol also entrust their projects to the quality service of Hanse Haus. Our client, Wilfried Pertinger, is overjoyed with the outcome of his decision. “The house is innovative, elegant, smart and contemporary; all the things I’d always imagined my own home to be. It also provided excellent value for money and the Hanse Haus team gave me excellent advice on aspects including planning the layout, designing the lighting system and energy-efficient construction.” The architecture was adapted especially to suit the location on a steep slope. The open-plan kitchen and living room are located on the top floor, with a large glazed frontage and a spacious terrace. The bedrooms are on the floor below, with a basement and garage on the ground-level lower storey. “The plans got the very best out of the steep site.”

CASE STUDY – ELSTREE, HERTFORDSHIRE

After struggling to find a home to match their needs, Hanse Haus customers from Elstree began to look into the possibilities of self building. ‘We started looking for a 4-bed property with a garage, and a kitchen big enough to eat in. We also wanted to be within walking distance of the station and thought we’d find somewhere that needed a coat of paint but not much else. That wasn’t the case! There was just nothing like that available on the market so we started to think about the alternatives.’
The couple started researching for a suitable build partner and found Hanse Haus along with other manufacturers on the internet. ‘We then went to the Homebuilding & Renovating Show at the NEC and also Ecobuild at Excel where we talked to the various building companies. We showed the sales representatives our own concept design and this is when Hanse Haus first stood out. Where others took one look at the vaulted ceilings and multi-levelled roof structure and said they couldn’t do it, Hanse Haus had a can-do approach and invited us to Germany to discuss it further with one of their architects. Their attitude was refreshing and inspiring from the outset and no other manufacturer offered what they did both in terms of the package and costs. The Hanse architect in Germany was able to ‘tidy up’ our design and also suggest improvements here and there.’
Once the plot had been purchased, planning granted and the existing dilapidated 1950s home on it demolished, Hanse approved ground workers started to lay new foundations & drains. ‘A pre-manufactured house can be finished up to nine months quicker than a traditional build and we had no concerns over budget as Hanse Haus offered a fixed cost contract, which didn’t even vary with the fluctuating exchange rate. We were able to build a modern, functional, highly energy efficient yet very comfortable home, which is suitable for family life in the 21st Century. Now that we’re living in it, our new home really has exceeded our expectations.’ » Read more

HANSE HAUS ARE AN EXCELLENT COMPANY WITH VERY HIGH STANDARDS

For Nick and Gill Sole, retirement has meant relocating to Devon in search of community life, and building a house which they know will keep them warm without costing the earth. A retired engineer, Nick first learnt about energy efficient homes in Canada, 35 years ago, and has hankered after building his own timber frame house ever since.

“We wanted a functional house, which meant that we can be warm whilst also being in control of the energy heating costs. In retirement, our money is finite, so an energy efficient house was the obvious way forward. Living in Derbyshire, in 2009, we took a holiday in the Scilly Isles and on the way back we decided to take an extra week to explore the South West. Gill had been to Exeter University so knew the area to some extent, and Devon really appealed to us. We went home to our traditionally built, brick and block, drafty house in Derbyshire, and when 3 different plots came up for sale in the town of Bradninch, on an internet site, I drove back to Devon to take a look. I also made the effort to meet some of the locals and discovered that Bradninch has a strong Arts background, a music festival in the summer, a book club and even a community bee keeping group. It was everything we wanted. One plot in particular stood out, which had existing planning permission for a bungalow, and we decided to go for it”, says Nick. » Read more

THE HOUSE WAS FINISHED EXACTLY WHEN THEY SAID IT WOULD BE

It all began when Sue Sadler wanted more wardrobe space.  First of all, Sue and her husband Pete looked at altering part of the chimney breast and extending to allow for more space in their 1930’s house but the more they looked into it, the more complicated it became.  They had completely refurbished, re-wired and re-plumbed the house when they first moved in, 28 years ago, and have since extended on to the kitchen, built a conservatory and a double garage. » Read more

HANSE HAUS ALWAYS FOLLOW THROUGH WITH WHAT THEY PROMISE

Richard & Irene Atkin signed a contract, subject to planning, with Hanse Haus.  A few amendments were made to the drawings, and the plans got passed.  Hanse Haus then translated the drawings into their own system and the process got under way.  “When the new drawings came back to me, I thoroughly checked everything and questioned things when I needed to.  I had to be assured that we were going to have the house we’d planned for”, says Richard. » Read more

HANSE HAUS HAVE BEEN INCREDIBLY EFFICIENT FROM START TO FINISH

“Watching our old Chalet Bungalow being knocked down in just 3 hours was quite a daunting experience.  We’d lived in it quite happily for the past 5 years but with 3 children, space had become an issue and we decided it was time for something bigger.
The bungalow also had zero insulation, which meant that we were constantly feeding the Rayburn with wood to keep the place warm – it was labour intensive and with a camping and caravan site and log cabin retreat to run, it was taking up far too much time. We wanted to build our own bespoke house but had concerns about the time it would take and the cost.  Then, our local district councillor mentioned Hanse Haus to us and since then we didn’t look back.  Our plans were passed in February ’08, we signed a contract with Hanse Haus in April ’08 and the house was built in November ’08. We then moved into our new home for Christmas”.  Helen Gurd. » Read more

WE NOW HAVE EXACTLY THE HOME WE WANTED ... AND AT THE RIGHT PRICE

“Having previously restored an old property, we were well aware of the work involved and the limitations of building with bricks and mortar so when we decided to build our new farmhouse, we went for a timber frame.  We had the planning in place and drawings from our architect before we went to a self-build show and came across Hanse Haus.  We were instantly impressed with their efficiency and commitment to quality and after a trip to Germany, where we saw the high standards of the manufacturing process, we easily made the decision to build a Hanse Haus." » Read more

IT WAS CLEAR TO US FROM THE OUTSET THAT HANSE HAUS OFFERED A SUPERIOR STANDARD

I had planned to project manage the build myself but then we read about Hanse Haus in one of the self build magazines, in March last year, and having had such a quick, efficient response from our original enquiry, we decided to go for the stress-free option.

THESE HOUSES REALLY ARE THE FUTURE

Now semi-retired, Jenny & Billy Winn have spent their whole lives in the beautiful area that is West Cornwall.  Once in the building business themselves, Jenny & Billy then ran a Funeral Directors for many years.  “We knew that eventually we wanted a home with a sea view”, says Billy.  And, they’ve certainly achieved that!

Their new build is situated just outside of Marazion and enjoys spectacular, uninterrupted views across the bay to Penzance and over St Michaels Mount.

“We looked at a few properties in the area but they were all very small and had limited or no parking facilities.  Then, in December 2010, we found this plot which had a small 1930’s built bungalow on it.  Most importantly, it was in the right location with the wonderful view, so we went for it”, says Jenny.

A friend had previously built a pre-manufactured house, which helped make Jenny & Billy’s decision to do the same.  “With such a fast build time and fixed cost, as well as the associated warmth of timber-framed buildings, it made sense to go with a pre-manufactured house rather than a traditional build.  These houses really are the future”, says Billy. » Read more
