HANSE HAUS Highly Commended in Self Build Awards

Our very own Hanse Haus certified Passive House has achieved ‘Highly Commended’ in the Construction Systems category of the Self Build Product Awards, in association with Homebuilding & Renovating magazine.  This category gives recognition to innovation in house construction systems, including masonry, timber frame, structural insulated panels, insulated concrete formwork, steel frame, roofing systems and alternative forms of construction.  So, why does the Hanse Haus certified Passive House stand out?

Running Costs -

Well, first of all, the Passive House achieves outstanding thermal insulation and an extremely low space heating requirement of only 15 kWh per square metre of floor area per annum.  As a result, it’s estimated that for a 180 sq m2 passive house, the consumption cost for heating , (based on 20p per KWH) would be just £45 per month, on average.

Build Costs-

Also, whilst the Passive house doesn’t cost the earth to run, it also doesn’t cost the earth to build.  Although it always depends on the internal fit out and architectural design, the estimated cost of a turn-key passive house is approximately £1400/sqmtr.  This price includes floor covering, tiles for bathrooms, oak stairs, internal/external doors, bathroom fixtures and taps, skirtings, internal window sills, electrical work, plumbing, and heating.

Also, where the current Code for Sustainable housing is Code 3 in the UK, the Hanse Haus Passive house (which includes certain renewable energy technologies) could meet Code 6 requirements.  (That’s to say, that although the Passive standard is the ultimate ecological standard, houses that meet Code 6 for sustainable housing require many of the same standards that a passive house does.)

Further to this, Hanse Haus stands out from it’s competitors with the implementation of the finer details.  With top quality craftsmanship, Hanse Haus ensures the completion, from Start to Finish, of a 180 square metre property in just 5-6 weeks.

The Passive house really is an engineered building for a new generation of homeowners and the whole construction process as well as the individual structural elements, such as the walls, windows and roof are verified by the Passiv-haus-Institut in Darmstadt, Germany.  This passive house certification provides official confirmation that the building is built to the correct specification.

What’s more, with Hanse Haus, the Passive house standards are not an elite ideal, but an affordable code of build where technology can be applied to an average UK family home where utility running costs are of primary importance.  Passive house standards can also be applied to social and affordable housing in the UK.

Details of the Hanse Haus ‘Highly Commended’ Passive House, along with images, will be displayed via graphic panels at the National Home Building and Renovating Show at the NEC in Birmingham from 18th – 21st March 2010.   Please come along and see for yourself.  A Hanse Haus representative will also be on hand to answer any questions you might have.

BIG GREEN HOME SHOW

As the recession sees more frustrated homeowners turned homebuilders, self builders could be the ones to lead the way in sustainable building

For any budding self builder or renovator, the choice to build and live ‘green’ can take up a lot of energy! Deciding which methods are the ‘greenest’, researching which products will save energy and calculating carbon footprint can be confusing. However, for anyone committed to a more sustainable, environmentally-friendly and energy-efficient way of living, the Big Green Home Show at the National Self Build & Renovation Centre is a great place to learn about building and living ‘green’.

The National Self Build & Renovation Centre in Swindon will host its second Big Green Home Show in October (23rd – 25th), aimed at prospective homebuilders baffled by all the eco jargon and green technology. The three-day Show will look at all aspects of green homebuilding and eco-friendly lifestyles, with an array of hands-on demonstrations, leading industry experts and professionals, and an opportunity to see and learn about the latest ‘green’ products and systems.

The Big Green Home Show will demonstrate that a green lifestyle isn’t just about putting a giant compost heap in the back yard, or sticking a wind turbine on the roof. Building and creating an environmentally-friendly house requires good planning and budgeting, and it’s important to understand all the different options available. As well as eco experts, visitors to the Show can also hear from people who have built their own eco-homes, tour the EDF Energy Renovation House to discover how to renovate to improve energy efficiency, and check out the latest materials and products to help minimise carbon emissions and reduce energy consumption.

Tim Doherty, of the National Self Build & Renovation Centre, explains:
“We have gained fantastic insight into what our visitors enjoy most and what types of projects they are undertaking to fit their lifestyles. As expected, the sustainability issue is a key feature of many self build and renovation projects, with our visitors looking for the latest energy-saving ideas, eco-friendly materials and products, along with ‘green’ lifestyle advice to complement their new eco-friendly homes.”

“Although many people are interested in becoming ‘greener’, there is a lot of confusion about costs, benefits and the payback of eco-friendly products and green living.  The Big Green Home Show will help visitors to decide which products and methods best meet their needs and how to complement these with lifestyle changes to create a truly ‘greener’ way of life. Our expert speakers, building and product demonstrations, and presentations, coupled with the Centre’s permanent educational exhibits and features, means that the Big Green Home Show can provide all the answers to unearth the real story on sustainable housebuilding and living.

Visitors can bring their plans to life with the help of the CAD design team, take a guided tour of the EDF Energy Renovation House, get hands-on with building and product installation demonstrations, check out hundreds of products, consult leading industry experts and professionals, find out how to finance their new building project, discover how to get exclusive offers and discounted prices on building materials, and get tips and advice from those who have built their own eco homes.

For comprehensive and impartial advice on green self build, renovation and home improvement, visit the Big Green Home Show (23rd - 25th October 2009) at the National Self Build & Renovation Centre in Swindon, just off Junction 16 of the M4.
